To all friends and clients of IDL,
As we enter day five of physical distancing (we closed the doors for all but emergencies last Friday), many of us are finding it particularly frustrating to be in a position where we can merely watch and not act as this health crisis unfolds. Yesterday I gave myself a break from all social media (except Pluto https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiBYw3bDFro ) and the Prime Minister’s daily address. When I awoke this morning, the sun came up, yesterday’s news was waiting for me and so was my country as it prepared itself for a win. This was a welcomed break and I valued the little bit of control it returned to me. Tomorrow, I might vacation again.
How about some GOOD news? Within hours of closing the doors at IDL I started hearing about our industry repurposing itself as it prepared for this fight. I had emails from suppliers and clients alike commiserating on how we could best support our front-line workers as they faced a potential shortage in personal protective equipment (PPE). By Sunday we had re-programmed our printers and had a face shield prototype ready for approval. On Monday, the team was working on design adjustments that would enable us to scale up production.
In addition to this we are test printing “multi-port venturi valve” prototypes for the hospital’s evaluation should the need for these respirator adaptors become necessary. As we work in collaboration with our partners at Georgian College and other local businesses the collective effort is delivering more than solutions, it’s bringing us all some much needed hope. We’re in this together and together we will prevail.
Finally, I think we can all agree that the recommendations we have been receiving from our governing bodies are pretty clear. Emergencies only. Now that “essential service” guidelines are in place as well, we have an even greater responsibility to do everything we can to limit any potential for spreading this virus. I am available by cell or email anytime should an emergency arise. Together with Crystal, Gord and Ali, IDL will evaluate and triage all requests for service as they come in and if deemed absolutely essential, will establish a production plan.
I hope you are all finding some peace amidst this calamity.
Let’s stay healthy, stay distanced but let’s stay very much together.
